Neckties are the best clothing accessories to use as accents for your office or formal attire. Neckties are usually worn with suits, coats, or dress shirts. For many men, picking out the right ties from the wide variety available can be difficult. To choose the right necktie, here are some of the important factors you can consider.

Your wardrobe. It is always important to put your clothes into consideration when buying ties. Assess your wardrobe and determine which clothing pieces you wear often. Moreover, you should consider the common colors and patterns of your clothes. This can help you choose the neckties that match most of your clothes.

Tie material. Nowadays, ties are produced in a wide variety of materials, including silk, satin, cotton, polyester, and wool. Ties made from satin or silk are usually considered the best of the bunch. Cotton and polyester ties are more affordable and are typically easier to clean and dry. If you’re not keen on the prospect of spending for dry cleaning, you’re probably better off buying cotton and polyester ties.

Your physical attributes. Basically, your skin complexion and hair color are the main considerations when it comes to your physical attributes. You have to determine your color profile before buying neckties. Men with low-contrast color profiles, or light hair color and a fair skin tone, should always wear light contrast colors. Wearing ties such as a bright yellow tie when you have a low-contrast color profile can overwhelm your appearance.

When it comes to men with a high-contrast color profile (may have dark hair color and fair skin tone, or light-colored hair with dark skin tone), dressing more boldly is recommended, as long as proper contrast between dark and light colors is observed. You can wear a bright yellow tie or red tie, but make sure to properly match it with the right shirts.

Purpose and occasion. More than anything else, it’s the purpose of the neckties that matter. If you’re attending a formal occasion, wearing loud-patterned ties is definitely not recommended. For formal events, you can opt to wear ties in colors such as black, gray, or white. To make your outfit more interesting without going overboard, you can also go for a pale yellow tie.
